And After Valentine’s Day …………

First comes Valentine’s Day, on February 14th, all sweetness and light …..

2015.01W-64 And then comes reality …..

Funny 1909This postcard, from Bamforth & Co, was posted in April 1909.

This at a time when women didn’t go out to work, women didn’t wear pants or jeans, and when a domineering woman who ruled her hen-pecked husband was said “to wear the trousers“.

Perhaps a modern version would have Who is going to have control of the remote control ?

More connections to Valentine’s Day can be seen through the links on Sepia Saturday.

Funnily enough, my husband doesn’t really like to have to deal with the remote & would rather have daughter Suzanne or me take it. He says his fingers are too big & he’s always hitting the wrong buttons & then having to figure out what he did wrong. I really don’t want to have to deal with it either because both of the others want all the commercials muted. I just tune them out in my head & that way no one has to remember to mute and unmute. But I’m outnumbered, so daughter pretty much controls the remote in our house.

This is a great vintage card. He’s either telling her, “I wear the pants in this family” or asking her if she could mend the hole in his pocket. But y’all are too funny. The one in the white sleep cap with the chin strap is clearly a female. Notice the ruffles at the bottom of the sleeves.

On occasion when my trousers have shrunk (or I’ve expanded) my wife has commandeered them for herself. But a few weeks ago when I was away she phoned to ask how to access the extra features on the TV remote. Despite my instructions she could not get it to work. So I guess I am still part-master of the household!

I’ve never really thought about it until this week. But it seems like a commercially inspired idea which has crept into Australia, a get-out-of-jail-free card for being uninspired and unimaginative on the other 364 days of the year. 🙂
